Stocks

I invested $20,000 in the following companies on February 17, 2021:

Apple, Disney, FaceBook, Amazon, Target. They where the companies I thought of.

By May 25, 2021, I gained:

$58.7

I learned a lot about the Stock Market. For example, it is very stressful, chaotic, and unpredictable. But, it is also very rewarding. For example, one week you can lose $300 and the next day, you make $10,000! I truly enjoy this experience. And now I have experience in the stock market so that if I do ever decide to invest my own money, I know how to do it.

Ted Talk

Hello! So in class these past couple weeks we have been watching  TED talks in class. Then, after we had watched a lot off them, my teacher told us to pick a topic that we know a lot about, and to write and perform a ted talk on it. I chose dog training because I know a lot about it and have experience in it. I talked about the different personalities dogs can have and what tricks work well. I will include the script below, since I couldn’t add the video. And I will add a picture of them dog that I refer to in the script. His name is Cooper, he is a mini dachshund, and his name in Super Cooper because he is really fast. He is a really good boy.

What do you think of when you see this picture. (shows picture) You might think cute, adorable, ugly even. But that’s just a face. Behind that is a whole ‘nother world worth exploring. There are six different personalities that dogs can have. This will determine what kind of training skills you will have to develop to train this pup.

The Aggressive is only for experienced trainers, and is NOT FOR CHILDREN. That being said, this dog will require lots and lots of patience. You need to train every day, and assert YOUR dominance.

The Confident pup will also be very dominant and loyal to their master. They are a bit difficult to train,  but once they are trained, they are completely loyal to their master.

The Outgoing doggy will be fairly easy to train, and is perfect for children or someone who is just learning how to train dogs.

The Insecure one may be a bit tricky, but lots of treats and positive reinforcement will do the trick.

Adaptable won’t be hard for sure, and I highly recommend it for children. They are very easygoing, and not startled easily.

Finally, we have Independent. Now, these pups will take a bit more time, as they will provide lots of resistance to human leadership, so you will need to assert your dominance.

Here are a few tricks I have found when training these little buddies.

  1. The best treat ever is little pieces of cheese
  2. Positive reinforcement is highly recommended. Negative reinforcement may give the dog a bad attitude towards training time.
  3. Be repetitive. Make sure that when you are learning a new trick, you will need to practice it every day.
  4. Sitting is the base for all things. The first thing your dog needs to know is how to sit still. Not squirming or moving.

A few things that I would like to mention that I have learned from the dogs I train.

  1. Squirrels are the worst
  2. Human food tastes so much better than kibble
  3. Leaves are best eaten off the ground, not from the tree
  4. Belly rubs are awesome

I’ll turn it back to Live Hannah for questions

Tree Book

Hello again! Hannah here! Today I am going to be telling you about my tree book project. A tree book is a book that has covers that look like tree trunks and there are two flaps on the inside so stick things to. They kind of look like pages.

Mine was blue. I am a fully remote student so in the beginning it was a bit difficult, but I was able to come on campus a few times, just to sort out the kinks and to do anything that I couldn’t do at home.

The first thing that we did was we had to fold the books into this right shape. Then we had to cut a hole in the seam. This would be used later to stick things to it, such as my wishes and my roots poem, which I will explain later. We glued down the ends of the tree book next.

The next thing that we did required me to go into school. We did a bit of collaging. We took a bunch of scrap paper and then glued them to the inside of the paper. This part took a long time because every time I would stop and say I was done, somebody would find something and then I would have to keep on gluing.

While everything was drying, we wrote one of four things that will be put on our tree books. This one was called Salute to My Roots. I wrote this on my grandfather who passed away last april. I will include the poem at the end of the post. The next writing piece was my Life list. It is where you write down your goals in life, near or far in the future. I will also include this at the end of the post. Second to last is my When This is Over poem. It is a poem I wrote about when we are all allowed to get together in public without masks. It is also at the bottom of the post. And finally we have my wishes. Those are all the things I want to accomplish. It is also at the bottom of the post.

Once we glued everything onto the tree book, we brought them all to the Frank Gallery in Chapel Hill, where they were put in an exhibit. My family (me, my parents, and my little sister) went to see it. Then we went to get chick-fil-a. We had a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed my experience.

Salute To My Roots

I never really heard my grandfather talk. Ever since I was little, I have never really heard him speak. He wasn’t always this way. My mom said that he used to talk more often. When I was about two months old, my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. And so, like most cancer patients do, he went through chemotherapy. And for a while it seemed to work. But the cancer came back. So, back into chemotherapy. It worked, and for a while he was fine. During this time, I was about eight years old. I didn’t know he was sick. All I knew was that, he needed help walking sometimes, and that he would fall.

But as time went on, I noticed that something changed. He started to engage with us more. When they visited, he helped me with my math homework. Then we went to the Greensboro Museum. It’s more of a park, but nonetheless we had fun. As we were waiting in line to get tickets so I could ride the zipline with my dad, my little sister, sitting in her red wagon, looked up at my grandfather and said, “Poppy, get in the wagon so I can push you,” and without even thinking, he hoisted himself of the bench he was sitting on and started to lift his leg to put in the wagon. My dad stopped him, of course. There were so many ways that this could have resulted in disaster. But it was just a truly sweet moment and what makes this extra special is that was the last time I saw my grandfather. Unfortunately, the cancer came back, and he went into a coma. On April 11th, 2021, Arthur Elman, Poppy, passed away in his sleep. So in conclusion, my grandfather was caring, smart, goofy, and most importantly, he loved us so much.

Where I want to live: on a farm in North Carolina

When this is Over

When this is over

I will never take for granted again

Saying hi to a stranger

Gobbling down food at a restaurant

The rush of bubbles floating past my face in the neighborhood pool

The warm glow of a friend’s smile

The sun on my face

Waking up early on a Monday morning

The sweet breath of a puppy retrieving a ball

Smelling the sweet nectar from a flower

Laughing at the family dinner table

Running with a friend

The feel of the wood in my hands as you ascend your favorite tree

Dancing at the end of the movie

The sweet taste of ice cream from downtown

Pointing out all the stars in the sky

Racing to the top of a hill

The first line of the play

Soaring through the air on a trampoline

A long lecture

Tracing my hand in chalk

The smell of the Thanksgiving turkey

Cheering on family at a race

When this is over

May we flood the streets

In joyous celebration

That we are now free

May we never again

Take for granted

The lives that we live

Every single

Day

Wishes

I wish to be successful in life

I wish for my sister to be successful in life

I wish my mom didn’t have to work as hard as she does

I wish my dad would talk to his friends more

I wish that I will get to see my family soon

I sometimes wish that our leaders acted like adults instead of petty children

I wish that people use common sense more often

My Frances Dowell Story One

,

The author, Frances Dowell, made some videos for my class back in 2020. She told us to start with a ‘what if’ question. A what if is a hypothetical story prompt, where you say “ what if……” and then think of something that would be a what if. I wrote “what if magic was real’ then before I knew it, I had idea for a story in my head.

Speaking of my story, the story that I wrote is about 4 kids who inhale some magical mist on earth, that gives them magical powers. They get into all sorts of magical shenanigans before realizing their purpose is to stop an evil Demoness from destroying the realms, magic and mortal. Can they fight an 10,000 year old evil Queen, all while finding out that the people they trust to help them, may not be so innocent after all. Find out in “THE DARKEST NIGHT” okay, back to Frances.

Frances also met with everyone to give them feedback. The feedback she gave me was “you have a novel on your hands” and I do!! I have loved writing my story and I am very excited to finish it. And to Frances, if you are reading this, I’m almost finished and I am very excited for you to read it!!

Window or Mirror

* a window is a book that reflects your life and a mirror is like a window into a different world.

Over the 2020 summer I read a book called “Greetings from Witness Protection” by Jake Burt. I think this book was more of a *window than a mirror for me because I don’t have any relatives who were/are in witness protection. I don’t know anybody who knows someone who has been/is in witness protection. I’ve seen other movies about witness protection, but I haven’t seen or read ANYTHING that depicts the day-to-day life of it. This book did a really good job of depicting a girl who had a dark past but she was able to overcome it so she could help a family who is hiding because they did the right thing. It’s a really good book, and I definitely recommend it as your next read.

(Back of book summary)

Nicki Demere is an orphan and a pickpocket. She is also the U.S. Marshals best bet at keeping a family alive…….

“The Marshals are looking for the perfect girl to join a mother, father, and son on the run from the nation’s most notorious bad guys. After all, the bad guys are searching for a family with one kid, not two, and adding a streetwise girl who knows a little bit about hiding things may be just what the marshals need. Nicki swears she can keep the Trevor family safe, but to do so she’ll have to dodge hitmen, cyberbullies, and the specter of standardized testing, all while maintaining her marshal-mandated B-minus average. As she barely balances the responsibilities of her new identity, Nicki learns that the biggest threats to her family’s security might not lurk on the road from New York to North Carolina, but rather in her own past.”

February Habit

Hello everyone! As you probably guessed by the title of this blog, I am going to be talking about my past daily habits and my new daily habit. So for November and December, I planked, increasing the time by 10 seconds every day. My next daily habit was to bake three treats every week and I kept up with that pretty well because if I wasn’t baking I was meal prepping for the next day. I actually improved my baking skills, so that I am now at the point where I can start to make my own recipes. Now for my new daily habit. My new daily habit is going to be…………………………… DOG TRAINING! I am going to be training my neighbors’ dogs for 20-30 minutes every day! I even got a clicker (which I am trained and know how to use)

And that is what my new daily habit is.

What Kind of Punctuation am I?

Hello everyone! I am here to tell you what puctuation I think I am. I think I am an exclamation mark because I may not know all the answers, but I’m energetic and eager to learn new things. I have a very sunny disposition about me, or so I’ve been told. I enjoy working with other people and I know just what to say to brighten someone’s day. I enjoy talking and I often will passionately debate you on any topic. To conclude, I would classify myself as an exclamation mark because I think that is what would fit me best.

Daily Habit

Hello! So during November and December, my daily habit was planking. Every day it would increase by 10 seconds and at the end of December, it got up to, about, 4 minutes. Now you’re probably thinking ‘it’s just 4 minutes, what’s the big deal?’ Well, if you haven’t planked for that long before, you will get so sore. Back to the topic. So after December, I picked a different habit. This time, I picked a baking habit. I am going to be baking 3 thing per week. Last week I made that roll cake. But I don’t know. I enjoy it, someone else might not. What do you think?

Baking

Hey everyone! Today’s post is about baking. Since Hanukkah is over tomorrow, I thought I would share a recipe for my jelly-donut cookies. I recently perfected my recipe,  which is shown below. They aren’t kosher, so these aren’t for conservative Jews. They are delicious, but they are very thick, like biscuits, so they hold heat in longer so be careful. Hope you enjoy, and have a happy holiday season.

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour

3/4 cup butter (room temperature)

1/2 cup powered sugar

1 tsp vanilla flavor

1/2 tsp baking salt

milk as needed

Preheat oven to 350°F

preheat oven to 350°F

Mix butter and sugar thoroughly.once mixed together thoroughly add flour, salt, vanilla flavoring. Once that is thoroughly mixed add milk. Shape into thumbprint cookies and add your favorite jam. Cooking oven for 16 minutes. Let cool and enjoy.
